Designate is a work that explores the possibility of live sampling, where the sound of one instrument is recorded and then mapped onto the playback function of the other instrument. The piano becomes a piano-drum kit hybrid, while the drum kit can playback pitched piano sounds.

The drum kit’s mechanism to do this is relatively simple: through a Max4Live device, the transients of the drum sounds trigger the playback of the piano sounds. The piano is a little more complex and uses lasers to turn mechanical energy into digital signal (this idea was developed from an original concept by Yshani Perinpanayagam and me as a solution to technical issues in the performance of Piano Nudes).
